Director Shy-Meeng Wu from the Department of Life Sciences, Director Ching-Huang Liu from the Department of Atmospheric Sciences and assistant Shu-Ling Hsiao from the Department of Life Sciences will participate in an academic exchange visit. The delegation, consisting of four members, is scheduled to visit the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and Kapiʻolani Community College from February 5 to 13, 2025. In addition to the scheduled visits, the delegation will also assess the academic progress of Chung Wei-Hsuan, a graduate student from the Department of Life Sciences. Through meetings, visits, and discussions, the visit aims to strengthen collaboration with relevant departments.

The Asian Productivity Organization (APO) hosted the "Capacity Development Workshop on Soil Carbon Visualization" from October 1 to 4, 2024, in Tsukuba, Japan. Dr. Szu-Meng Wu, the Director of our department, was invited to participate. Participants included experts and practitioners from various APO member countries. The Inter-Island Sustainability Educational Program by the University of the Ryukyus fosters international collaboration to address Pacific Island issues like energy, environment, and culture. Ke-Ni Chang participated in the 10-day Okinawa program, engaging in lectures, fieldwork, and cultural exchanges.

Taiwanese and Japanese students were mixed into groups to explore the relationship between environmental factors such as light, temperature, humidity, and soil characteristics with the chlorophyll content and morphology of plant leaves.

The course will include the extraction of plant DNA, observation of plant fluorescence under ultraviolet light, an introduction to the structure, principles, and correct usage of microscopes, and hands-on practice in observing animal organ sections.

This year's course lasted six days, starting with a snorkeling trip to Hou-Bihu in Kenting to observe fish upon arrival.

The field trip on May 18-19 included the following course activities: plot design, microclimate environment measurement, nocturnal biological survey, and soil animal investigation.

Professor Wu conducted a bilateral exchange program funded by the National Science Council and visited the Doñana Biological Station, which is part of the Spanish National Research Council, on March 24. During the visit, he primarily met with Dr. Gomez-Mestre, a researcher from the Ecological Evolution and Development Research Group at the station.

This year, the international joint course is scheduled to be held at the Alibang Ecological Farm in New Taipei City. On March 10, professors from both universities conducted a site visit together and discussed the course design

An ecological consultant is a professional who provides advice and guidance on ecological issues to businesses or organizations. Their primary role is to minimize the negative impacts of engineering projects on the ecological environment.

During this visit, Professor Kobayashi's main agenda is to meet with students participating in this year's international joint course, introduce Ryukyu University and the origins of the course, and confirm course details with the faculty of our department.
