The "Inter-Island Sustainability Educational Program" organized by the University of the Ryukyus is one of the initiatives funded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology under the "Inter-University Exchange Project." This short-term intensive program aims to enhance awareness of common issues faced by the Pacific Island Region, such as energy, environment, international relations, tourism, poverty, welfare, immigration, indigenous culture, and language preservation, through international collaboration. It also seeks to nurture talents equipped with specialized knowledge and skills to address these challenges. Participating institutions include the University of the Ryukyus, the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, Kauaʻi Community College, Kapiʻolani Community College, National Dong Hwa University, and Chinese Culture University, with outstanding students from these universities selected to join the exchange program in Okinawa. The program consists of academic lectures, fieldwork, cross-cultural interactions, and online collaborative learning.
Ke-Ni Chang from our department was selected to participate in this program, traveling to Okinawa from August 8 to August 17, 2024. During the 10-day program, she collaborated with students from other participating institutions, attending lectures on topics such as peace and human rights, tourism, terrestrial and marine environments. She also participated in field visits to the southern and northern parts of Okinawa Island, gaining an in-depth understanding of the local environment and culture. In addition to the course content, the program included interactions with students from the University of the Ryukyus, campus tours, and cultural experiences.
